Property Taxes

What new changes have been made to the tax statements?

New Parcel Numbers:
New Parcel Numbers have now been setup so that every parcel in Des Moines County has its own unique parcel number. The old parcel number was a seven (7) digit number and was unique in its own district. The new parcel number will be in the following format and will be a unique number within the whole county: ##-##-###-###. This number is associated with a map location within Des Moines County. Everyone will see this change on their statement.

New District Number:
The City of Burlington was previously separated into 27 separate districts. This was due to the large number of parcels within the city and the need to separate these parcels out into smaller groups when balancing was done by hand. With technology, balancing in large numbers has become streamlined; therefore, districts 001-027 were combined into one single district of 001. Only those who have parcels that used to be in Districts 002 through 027 will see this change.

Single Statement for Real Estate, Drainage, Levee, and Special Assessments:
The biggest change will be seen by those who have Drainage, Levee, or Special Assessment Taxes. The Drainage, Levee, & Special Assessment taxes were previously billed on separate statements. This year the Drainage, Levee, and Special Assessments will print directly on the regular Real Estate statement, eliminating the need for multiple statements to be printed and mailed. The Full Year Tax Due, the September 2008 Tax Due and the March 2009 Tax Due amounts will include the Drainage, Levee, or Special Assessment Tax Due amounts. Only those who have parcels that have Drainage, Levee, or Special Assessment tax will see this change.

What options are available to me to pay my property taxes?
