Private Wells Covered by Flood Waters

It is strongly recommended that citizens who utilize private wells that have been covered by flood waters have their water tested. Once the water has receded the well should be flushed, shock chlorinated and then tested to ensure the water is safe to drink.

Citizens of Des Moines County can contact Public Health at
319-753-8217 to inquire about water testing kits and having one of the environmental health workers come out and do the testing for them.

It is strongly recommended that this testing is done prior to utilizing the water source due to the fact that the flood waters can be contaminated with sewage, agricultural run-off and industrial by-products. It is necessary that the water be tested to ensure that anyone drinking or using water from this well would not be exposed to these contaminates that could potentially make them ill.
