Steps to restoring service
to
your home or business in
The utility
service to your home or business has been turned off due to flooding in the
area and we understand that you are eager to have power restored. But please know that the combination of water
with electricity and natural gas can create life-threatening situations. Safety must be your first concern. We appreciate your patience during this challenging time as we work to
restore your utility service. Listed below are the steps needed in order
to have your gas and/or electric service reinstated.
If you DO NOT have
flood damage
If
you DO have flood damage:
Flooded Gas Appliance
If water
has reached a gas appliance, a licensed heating or appliance/service repair
contractor must check the unit. In all
cases where you have decided to salvage the unit, you will need to replace gas
valves, pilot and burner orifices, controls and the filter. A qualified professional only should do this
work. Interstate Power and Light will not relight these appliances until
this work is completed.
Natural gas
furnaces, water heaters, space heaters and boilers all have gas valves and
controls that are especially vulnerable to water damage from floods. Corrosion begins inside the valves and
controls, and damage may not be readily visible, even if the outside of the
device is clean and dry. At a minimum,
this damage can result in reliability problems.
More severe consequences could be fire or explosion.
Note that you need to
be present at your home or business to allow Interstate Power and Light to
restore your gas service and that we ask you have documentation available from
your licensed heating or appliance/service repair contractor showing that your
appliances have been inspected.
Flooded Electrical System
If your electrical meter socket has
been submersed in flood waters, the socket must be replaced. You may want to contact a licensed
electrician to access the damage and assist repairs to your electrical
system. If your home experienced any
water encroachment, your electrical system must be inspected by your local
government inspector and all local and state codes must be followed. Documentation of the inspection must be
presented to Interstate Power and Light, prior to restoration of your
electrical service. Interstate Power
and Light will not restore the electrical service to your home without an
electrical service inspection.
