Voting by Absentee Ballot at the Election Office/Auditor's Office

Routinely the Election Office/Auditor's Office issues a press release to announce when absentee ballots are available and ready for voting.

The last day to vote by absentee ballot is always the day before the election during regular Election Office/Auditor's Office hours which are 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Requesting to have an Absentee Ballot Mailed

Occasionally, a person may require their ballot be mailed to an address other than their registered address. Examples of individuals who may require this would be college students, individuals whose primary residence is in Des Moines County, but who live a few months out of the year in another state, or who have a P.O. Box mail to address.

Those in the Armed Forces need not register if they vote a military ballot. The request constitutes registration, with a county address. There is additional information and application forms on the Internet through the Federal Voting Assistance Program.

Returning Absentee Ballots in the Mail

In order for the ballot to be counted, the carrier envelope must be received in the auditor's office/commissioners office before the polls close on election day or be clearly postmarked by an officially authorized postal service not later than the day before the election, and received by the commissioner not later than noon on the Monday following the election.

If Unable to Mail Absentee Ballot back prior to Election Day

Absentee ballots returned personally may be delivered to the Election Office/Auditor's Office (located on the 2nd floor of the courthouse) on the election day prior to the closing of the polls. Polls close at 9 pm for Primary and General elections, and 8 pm for Municipal, School and Special elections.

Absentee ballots MAY NOT be turned in at a polling place EXCEPT to be SURRENDERED AND VOIDED, in which case the voter will be allowed to vote on the machine.

If an Individual Should Become Hospitalized within 3 days of an Election

The Code Of Iowa has a provision which allows them to make a request call to the Election Office no later than 4 hours before the polls close. The issued ballot will be personally delivered to that voter at the hospital by 2 election officials who will assist the voter in voting (if requested) and return the sealed, voted ballot to the Election Office to be counted on election day.
