International Travel Requirements

A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the bearer. A valid U.S. passport is required to enter and leave most foreign countries.

Important Travel Notice: Change in International Travel Requirements

All travelers, including U.S. citizens, to and from the Americas, the Caribbean and Bermuda will soon be required to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States.

This initiative from the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security will be implemented in phases. The proposed timeline is as follows:

  • December 31, 2006
Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
  • December 31, 2007
Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

Further information on international travel can be accessed at www.travel.state.gov, along with downloadable application forms, current requirements and fees, travel warnings, and consular information sheets on every country in the world.

The travel.state.gov website is maintained by The Bureau of Consular Affairs a division of The U.S. Department of State.
